Nelson Ferebee (b. 1849) was a member of a well-established Camden County, N.C., family. His father, a lawyer, maintained a substantial plantation with a large slave population. Ferebee graduated from the University of Maryland medical school in 1871, and in 1872 he enlisted in the Navy as an assistant surgeon.
